New Museum, New Curriculum New Programme

From September 2009 an extended and flexible education programme for primary schools is available at Mid-Antrim Museum.  The programme features four sessions linked to the new curriculum with stated generic learning outcomes.  Our emphasis is on delivering a unique experience for pupils with opportunities to handle artefacts and role play.

Programmes:

Innovation and Impact - This interactive session uses Victorian objects, photographs, activities and experiments to explore the invention of electricity and how it works. Through hands on activities children learn about static electricity and circuits. The children also explore the impact that the invention of electricity had on technology and how it affected every day life for both the Victorians and society today. (Year Group 5, session time 1hr 30 mins)

Rationing and Raids - This session explores the main themes of rationing and raids and the effect on people's lives during the Second World War (KS1, session time 1hr)

Early Man and Materials - This interactive session uses role play and museum artefacts to explore how Stone Age Man lived interdependently with his environment, used the materials available to him and adapted over time.  The session also looks at the work of archaeologists and explores the concept of which materials decay and which survive over time. Children engage in a variety of hands on activities including a mini dig and exploration of a replica Mesolithic hut. (KS2, session time 1hr 30mins).

Then and Now: Ballymena in the 1920s and today - This hands on session uses a variety of museum objects and photographs to explorehow the local area has changed over time, how everyday objects have changed over time and the similarities and differences between lives past and present. The session focuses on the areas of people, home and work.(KS1, session time 1hr ).

Information on KS sessions:

KS2 sessions  - last 1hour and 30 minutes but we allow an extra 45 minutes to accommodate a gallery visit, toilet and snack break.  So for single class groups the visit time is 2 hours 15 minutes. You will need to allow extra time if you would like to visit the museum shop.  For groups over 40 special arrangements are made which incorporate a gallery visit. Please talk to staff for more details.

KS1 sessions  - last 1hour but we allow an extra 45 minutes to accommodate a gallery visit, toilet and snack break.  So for single class groups the visit time is 1 hour 45 minutes. Each session is available throughout the academic year at a time to suit your shchool through advance booking.  As last year, book two sessions and get the third session free.
